"You can map your life through your favorite movies, and no two people's maps will be the same."
- Mary Schmich With a shared love of films and Smallville, we invited everyone to join the Challenge and submit fics, manips, and art based on prompts culled from pre-1980 classic movies.
A selection of films was made available for previewing a few days before the sign-up period began, and each movie was available to any two participants. At the end of the sign-up period, we sent the prompts -- a quote and an object/location from the movie -- via e-mail.
For example, if a participant had chosen "Strangers on a Train", we would have sent a prompt such as:
Location/object: private compartment.
Quote: "I have a theory that you should do everything before you die."
Then an artist could have made a manip of Clark and Lex (or any other non-canonical pairing) having some fun on a train, an author could have written a fic Clexing the plot or used any of the prompts to go on an entirely different journey with their chosen SV characters.
The prompts we provided were meant to jumpstart the imagination instead of act as boundaries. We also asked that the participants include an afterword -- detailed or simple -- about the movie choice and the inspiration behind the work.
This challenge and archive were able to come together thanks to efforts of many talented and hardworking individuals.
We hope you enjoy perusing the end products as much as we've had organizing the challenge.
Please send a note of appreciation to the creator of any work that you find enjoyable, have fun and do check back for more entries to come!
